Graduate Program

Over the next few decades, most nations of the world will see unprecedented growth in the number and proportion of older adults.  By 2030, 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 years and older.  This shift in age structure will raise many new issues to be faced by society, increasing the demand for educators and researchers with a specialty in the physical, psychological, social, and policy dimensions of aging and the life course.  The retirement of the postwar Baby Boom cohort will simultaneously be the retirement of the generation of gerontologists whose ranks expanded sharply in the 1970s with new Federal funding and initiatives.  A new generation of scholars and scientists in aging will be needed to take their place.

Graduate study in Gerontology at the University of Kansas consists of these programs:

  1. Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Gerontology
  2. Graduate Certificate in Gerontology The Certificate Program is no longer accepting new students; currently enrolled students may continue to complete requirements.
  3. Dual-title Ph.D. degree in Gerontology and selected social science disciplines.

These programs are interdisciplinary in structure. They are administered through the Gerontology Center, a component of the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies.
